Protecting the Post: Alvarez Takes on Expanded Security Leadership
Alvarez, who has served at the Army’s home in the Caribbean since 2022, now oversees approximately 30 personnel after previously supervising a team of 15 as a lieutenant. Her responsibilities include security operations at the Borinqueneers Gate and Spc. Frances M. Vega Gate, vehicle access operations and the Visitor Control Center.
“This is a very big position, and I take it with that seriousness,” Alvarez said. “I’m honored and humbled to have this opportunity.”
Thomas Acosta Lamberti, director of Fort Buchanan’s Directorate of Emergency Services, said Alvarez’s promotion supports the installation’s efforts to strengthen leadership and supervision within its Physical Security Section.
“Captain Alvarez is highly qualified, and focused on the Buchanan mission and providing customer service to all our visitors, veterans and their dependents,” Acosta said. “She has the attributes that are required for the position, and she has the experience and the education to be a good physical security supervisor.”
A resident of Carolina, Puerto Rico, Alvarez brings military, corrections and civilian law enforcement experience to the position. She enlisted in the Army in 2015 and served as a military police Soldier in security-related assignments before transitioning to civilian service. She also worked as a correctional officer at the Metropolitan Detention Center.
Alvarez holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Inter American University of Puerto Rico. She said her education has helped her understand human behavior and communicate with the Soldiers, families, civilian employees, veterans and visitors her team serves.
For Alvarez, working directly with people remains one of the most rewarding aspects of her job.
“People. Being one-on-one with people,” Alvarez said when asked what she enjoys most about her work. “Let me see how I can help you, even if we can’t do specifically what you’re asking for.”
That approach is especially important at the Visitor Control Center, where Alvarez and her team balance customer service with the responsibility of protecting the installation.
As she assumes greater responsibility, Alvarez said her priorities remain focused on supporting her team, protecting the community and helping people navigate installation access requirements.
For information about installation access, contact the Fort Buchanan Visitor Control Center at the Borinqueneers Gate at 787-707-3995. To stay informed about the latest updates at Fort Buchanan, the community is encouraged to download the MAPA app on their mobile devices, select Fort Buchanan as their installation, and enable notifications.
Fort Buchanan supports approximately 15,000 military personnel, including active-duty Soldiers, Army Reserve, Puerto Rico National Guard, Marine Corps Reserve and Navy Reserve members. The installation’s mission is to enable readiness and facilitate the deployment of forces anytime, anywhere.
